The Samsung Chromebook went on special invitation-only sale at 9am at high end member-only retailer Gilt.com. By 1pm, the number of Chromebooks set aside for the pre-sale were gone. Offers to be wait-listed were found by those hoping to pick up the machine with an eight second boot up. What we don’t know is how many were offered through Gilt.com.
Invitations to the sale were sent to current Chromebook users from Google’s pilot CR-48 program. The sale occurred two weeks before the public launch of the Samsung Chromebook. Is Google testing the water to see what demand exists or is it something different.
Next week will be all Apple news. There’s little Google can throw out that won’t be a footnote then, perhaps even about Android. Google may have seized this opportunity to score some media points with this sale by limiting how many Chromebooks were available so sell-out stories could take form.
What’s your take? Non-story (that I took the bait on) or Google sizing up demand?
